Eighty years.
One family.
South Coast Shingle opened on 11th Street in Long Beach in 1946. A few years later a bookkeeper named Sam Riddle walked in the door — and the Riddle family has been behind the counter ever since. All three of Sam's sons built their working lives here. Today his eldest, Ross, still leads the company, with the third generation on the ground at both yards.
Doors open on 11th Street
South Coast Shingle starts supplying Long Beach roofers from a small yard near Redondo Avenue — the year after the war ended, when SoCal was building like crazy.
Sam Riddle comes aboard
Hired as the bookkeeper. He rose to run the place — and the Riddles never left. Three generations of the family have worked this company since.
The move to South Street
The company moves to its current Long Beach yard near Cherry Avenue — the same ground the forklifts run on today.
The second generation
All three of Sam's boys grew up in this yard — Saturdays with their dad, then whole careers. Ross joined full-time in 1968 while studying business at Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach, and his brothers built their lives here alongside him. Two of them are gone now, and missed every day. If you've ever been treated right at this counter, you've felt their work.
The third generation runs the yards
Ross — the eldest — still leads the company he and his brothers grew up in, as President & CEO. And the third generation holds down both yards: Brandon Riddle in Laguna Niguel, Ryan Riddle in Long Beach — both raised in this company, both carrying it forward. Two yards, three showrooms, and a crew where the GM has been here 38 years and calls the Riddles family.
We're pleased to be as successful as we've been — and we owe it to our good customers and faithful employees.
These guys are my family.
The men who
built it.
Sam Riddle's sons grew up in this yard — Saturdays with their dad, then whole careers behind the same counter. Two of them are gone now, and missed every day. The way you get treated when you walk in? That's still them.
This photo still hangs in the office.
